HKS Continues to Commit to Green Power

DALLAS Feb. 18, 2011 HKS, Inc. has committed to greening its power by matching 100 percent of the electricity used at its 110,000-square-foot corporate headquarters with Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

Purchased from 3Degrees, the RECs represent 4,300 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity from renewable resources. By displacing the need to generate electricity using fossil fuels, HKS’s REC purchase will help avoid the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

This agreement allows HKS to achieve points toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and contributes significantly to large-scale renewable energy development. Since the design of the firm’s first LEED project in 1999, HKS has accomplished many major milestones demonstrating that sustainability and innovative design are core values of the firm including: 314 LEED-accredited professionals on staff; 54 million square feet of LEED-certified and LEED-registered projects; $16.8 billion of LEED-certified and LEED-registered projects; ranked 6th in ENR’s Top 100 Green Firms; and designers of the largest LEED project in the world.

Kirk Teske, HKS’s chief sustainability officer, attributes this success to the firm’s commitment to the Architecture 2030 Challenge – which calls upon the global building community to design and build carbon-neutral buildings by the year 2030. “This program reminds us to consider every day the enduring impact that our design decisions have on our clients, our eco-system and our future generations.”

Electricity production is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change. Using calculation from the EPA, HKS’s green power commitment will help avoid an estimated 3,087 metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2-e) greenhouse gas emissions. According to the EPA, this amount of CO2-e emissions is equivalent to the CO2 emissions generated from consuming or burning 7,310 barrels of oil, the annual CO2-e emissions from the use of electricity at 374 average American homes and the carbon sequestered annually by 658 acres of forest preserved from deforestation.
