3Degrees Expands Green Power Program Services to Utility Customers in Connecticut, Maine, and Washington

Utilities Across the Nation Choose 3Degrees to Help Them Offer Renewable Energy to Their Customers

SAN FRANCISCO, November 15, 2011 — At today’s Renewable Energy Markets Conference, 3Degrees announced that it has been selected by the Maine Public Utility Commission to launch a new, voluntary statewide green power program. In addition, the firm announced that it has won a competitive bidding process to be a green power supplier to the CTCleanEnergyOptions program. With these announcements, 3Degrees will soon be able to offer green power options to the majority of residential and commercial utility customers in the states of Maine and Connecticut.

The firm also announced that Seattle City Light has selected 3Degrees to help manage customer outreach for its Green Up green power program, and that Puget Sound Energy has decided to renew its green power program services contract with 3Degrees, after their current three-year partnership helped increase PSE’s Green Power Program participation rate by 50 percent since January 2008.

With these new and renewed contracts, 3Degrees and its utility partners will offer green power options to over 7.7 million residential and commercial utility customers in seven states. This represents growth of 2.5 million customers, or 48 percent, in 3Degrees’ utility voluntary program business since 2010.

“Voluntary green power programs enable utilities and their customers to increase overall demand for renewable energy,” said Adam Capage, Vice President of Utility Partnerships. “Our leadership in this growing market is a result of our unique understanding of how utilities can develop cost-effective green power programs that support local and regional renewable energy projects in a way that builds value for the utility, its customers, and other key stakeholders.”

Voluntary Green Power Program Leadership

These new and expanded partnerships, along with 3Degrees’ existing partnerships with Ameren Missouri (Pure Power), Dominion Virginia Power (Dominion Green Power®), City of Palo Alto Utilities (PaloAltoGreen), Pacific Power ( Blue Sky), and Silicon Valley Power (Santa Clara Green Power) make it the leading third-party provider of green power program services in the nation. 3Degrees’ leadership is also demonstrated by the fact that the average customer participation rate in its utility partners’ green power programs is 6.7 percent, a rate three times the national average.

In addition, 3Degrees has helped four of its partners — City of Palo Alto Utilities, Silicon Valley Power, Puget Sound Energy, and PacifiCorp — secure places on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) annual assessment of leading utility green power programs including first place in Customer Participation Rate (City of Palo Alto Utilities).

A Clear Path to Green Power Program Success

3Degrees implements its green power program services using its unique Community ConnectSM methodology — a set of tested processes and best practices that provide a clear path to green power program success. The Community Connect methodology helps utilities build green power programs that demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility and strengthen relationships with customers and other stakeholders.

“3Degrees’ Community Connect methodology incorporates knowledge gleaned from educating millions of customers on renewable energy,” said Capage. “Utilizing this methodology, we help utilities build intelligent and efficient green power programs that deliver value to their residential and commercial customers."

How Green Power Programs Work

Green power programs, also known as green pricing programs, enable residential and commercial utility customers to demonstrate their support for green power. When a customer chooses to participate in a green power program, the utility matches the customer’s electricity use with renewable energy. This ensures that for every megawatt hour of electricity used by the customer, another megawatt hour of electricity, generated from renewable resources, is delivered to the power grid.

To match their customers’ electricity use with renewable energy, the utility can use green power generated by green power projects they own, purchase green power from third-party owned projects through power purchase agreements (PPAs), or match their customers’ electricity use with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated from other regional green power projects. Green Power Programs allow customers to channel revenue to green power projects, and in return, secure the right to take credit for the environmental benefits associated with the green power generated by these projects. The customer also increases demand for renewable energy, encouraging the development of similar projects.
