Dan Kalafatas is co-founder and President of 3Degrees. As President, Dan leads overall business strategy, company operations and new product and service development.


Before forming 3Degrees, Dan co-founded the Utility Partnership and Renewable Energy Certificates Division of 3 Phases Energy Services in 2002 and served as its general manager for five years. During this time, Dan successfully positioned the company as a leading provider of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and utility voluntary green power program services.


In 2007, Dan led the formation of 3Degrees, a spin-off of the 3 Phases division he co-founded and ran from 2002 through 2007. Since its formation Dan has strengthened 3Degrees’ leadership position in the U.S. REC and utility green power program markets. In addition, Dan managed 3Degrees’ successful expansion into the carbon markets and the development of 3Degrees’ Environmental Market Services group, which provides environmental commodity trading, risk mitigation and strategic advisory services to utilities, project owners and other environmental market participants.


Dan directly advises many of 3Degrees partners on their environmental market business strategies, particularly in respect to, renewable energy and carbon emission regulatory compliance, environmental market risk exposure, and corporate sustainability. Under his leadership, the Department of Energy has recognized 3Degrees as Non-Utility Renewable Energy Supplier of the Year for the last three straight years.


Before his work at 3Degrees and 3 Phases, Dan was a management consultant at Carlisle, Fagan, Gaskins & Wise (CFGW) and at Carlisle & Company serving clients in regulated industries. Prior to this, he worked in corporate finance at JPMorgan covering Basic Industries.


A native of Massachusetts, Dan co-founded the Renewable Energy Business Network (REBN) in 2002 and is a member of the Advisory Board for the University of Arizona Masters in Climate Science and Solutions Program. Dan holds a BA in Economics from Dartmouth College, and an MBA with a certificate in Public Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
